A very informative article in The Financial Times written by global pharmaceuticals correspondent Hannah Kuchler. The article discusses the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in helping discover new antimicrobial compounds. There is a good illustrated explanation of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and a reminder of the predicted profound effect on mortality if action is not taken soon. A major issue is incentivising pharmaceutical companies to invest in research and development of new antibiotics which is going to require major financial commitment from national governments around the world.
